MODULE 2
HOW TO SELL NAMIBIA
Despite the lack of direct flights, Namibia makes for the perfect twin-centre with other African destinations. For example, Cape Town is just a two-hour flight away from Windhoek. Here are a few other reasons to sell the destination:
- Its distinctive and yet varied topography makes it a country of spellbinding beauty, which, coupled with its abundant sunshine, vast space, rolling horizons and clear, star-scattered skies, make it incredibly unique!
- Namibia can be a value-for-money destination – in fact, the quality and first-class service on offer is available at prices that are comparable with just about anywhere in the world
- When it comes to natural attractions, Namibia’s offerings are endless, making it the perfect destination for those who love the great outdoors
- Many of Namibia’s properties and attractions have an eco-friendly focus, which is a key selling point with sustainability now being one of most travellers’ top requirements
When selling Namibia here are a few key facts to remember:
- Driving distances can be long, but the rolling scenery makes time fly. If clients seem apprehensive, emphasise that the roads are largely in good condition, generally straight and predominantly empty
- Namibia’s place names can appear tricky – when in doubt, think phonetically!
- Highlight that the wildlife viewing is one-of-a-kind. There are many examples of uniquely adapted animals (the desert elephant for instance) and the spectacular open vistas make for a safari backdrop like no other
- Despite many travellers’ preconceptions about Africa, Namibia is a safe and family-friendly destination. It’s also very easy to get around – whether by car, plane or escorted coaches
- If clients have concerns about the malaria risk, stress that it is low to minimal in most parts of the country, or limited to a specific time of the year
WHEN TO VISIT:
Namibia is pretty much a year-round destination but – depending on what your clients want to see and do – some months may be better than others
May to October - Dry Season - Winter
- High season for safari – with less vegetation and wildlife congregating around the rivers and waterholes, animals are easier to spot making it the best time to visit Etosha
- Average temperature of 21-25°C during the day
- Temperatures can drop dramatically at night – it’s always best to pack warm winter clothing during June, July and August for the cold morning game drives
November to April - Wet Season - Summer
- Rainfall brings greener scenery and lower rates (summer is considered low season)
- At this time of the year you can see new-born animals and birding is at its best because migratory birds have flown in
- Although named the wet season, rains are largely just short, afternoon showers so would rarely have a negative impact
- From November to February it gets very hot
- It's more difficult to spot wildlife, especially in Etosha
